Writing for SEO: With 30,000 to 100,000 Websites Going Live Every Day — Here’s How to Make Sure Yours Is Getting Found

In early March, I received the following email from a writer who read this post, SEO Writing Tip: Why I Write with Google’s Keyword AdWord Tool Open at All Times. She wrote:

Yuwanda, I just read your above article. For the last year and a half I have been writing a career column for a non-profit. People have been finding the article (they have been e-mailing me at my website which is linked to article) telling how much they enjoy the column, seeking writing or job related advice, etc.

Question: should I be using keywords with my articles and how will that help me as a freelance writer, direct more traffic to my own site? I am working on a third book (non-business) and need to up my game, create book hype, etc.

Sometimes, I forget that because my head is in SEO day in and day out, not everybody else’s is. So here, I wanted to address this – a basic SEO writing issue.

In answer to her question, yes, in my opinion you should always write for SEO, which means identifying and using keywords in all of your articles and doing a myriad of other things that help drive traffic to your site.

It’s no longer enough to write good content to succeed on the web these days. Experts say that 30,000 to 100,000 new websites are published every day. How in the world will yours get found – even if it has the greatest content in the world?

Unless you have a lot of money to put into online marketing, you’re going to have to break out the sweat equity. This means that you must, must, must get in the habit of “writing for SEO,” so to speak – eg, doing keyword research, writing search-engine optimized copy, consistently doing article marketing, distributing content via social media outlets like Twitter, etc.

This is why I call my SEO company an “SEO writing AND distribution” firm for, once you write your content using search engine optimization guidelines, it has to be distributed in order to drive traffic and sales.

Now that you have a better understanding of why to write for SEO, here’s some detailed info on how to go about it. Employ these tactics consistently, and you will get more website traffic. I guarantee it.
