This morning, I did two projects for long-term clients. As I was linking to a post I’d written for one client back in August 2009, this tip I’m about to pass along came to me.

When you offer SEO copywriting services, a lot of times clients will give you what I call “one-off” projects. Eg, they’ll hire you for one project and may never use you again. In my experience, I have to say this doesn’t happen a lot in SEO writing, but it does happen.

I’ve been lucky enough to turn a few clients into long-term clients, and this is why I rarely have to prospect for work anymore. Current clients keep me busy – and they refer others. So I feel lucky.

How to Turn One-Time Clients into Long-Time Clients

One easy way to do this is to put together a benefits brochure that explains why it’s better to use you long-term. And you can use the following scenario as sort of a guide.

This one client I was writing for this morning teaches a series of online marketing classes around the country. Her firm had a blog when they hired me, but it was updated so infrequently that they weren’t getting any leads from it.

As an online marketer, she knew that this wasn’t good for her firm’s image. So she hired my SEO writing firm in February of 2009 to do one weekly blog post and one weekly article (for article submission purposes).

Because I do all of the writing for this blog, I’m able to link back to previous posts. This is known as intrasite linking (aka deep linking), which of course leads to better search engine positioning.

Not only this . . . she relays that her blog now has “a voice.” The interactivity on it has shot up, others are linking to it and, in short, she feels like they’re finally doing everything they should be doing as a company to attract customers.

As an SEO writer, these are the kinds of tangible benefits you can provide to clients. Many don’t realize what they’re losing by not using you. It’s up to you to make them aware of it. A benefits brochure mentioning that you can “bring a dead blog to life, increase leads, from it, give it an industry voice, etc.” can get the ball rolling for you.

I’ve had this client for over a year now. And, I’ve done other things for them – eg, a few ebooklets for their students on their subject matter. In short, I’ve become their “go to” writer, not just for SEO, but for other things as well.

Month in and month out, I can count on a certain income from this one SEO writing client that’s not too shabby. With a few clients like this under your belt, you can be making a fulltime income writing SEO content in no time at all.
