SEO Copywriting Advice: The #1 Mistake I’ve Made as an SEO Writer That Cost Me Clients – Here’s How to Avoid It; Freelance Job Lead Also

One of the reasons I love Twitter so much is that it is a wealth of ideas right at your fingertips. I had a couple of topics I wanted to cover in this week’s newsletter here, but a tweet I read gave me the idea for this post, which is a bit more timely than the other two I had rolling around my head.

The tweet was:

dodadopp:Read The *OnlineDon Twice Daily Connection! ▸ @InkwellEditor RT #Twitter poll on freelancers’ favourite perks: ▸http://t.co/OA1Ig2P

In the link to the e-zine,The *OnlineDon Twice Daily Connection!, was an article entitled, What To Do When You Feel Like A Miserable Online Business Failure.

The author hit on so many points that rang true for me that I just had to share my main failure as an SEO writer with you. I’ve had many failures in business of course, but here I want to tell you about the biggest one I’ve made as an SEO writer in hopes that you’ll avoid doing the same thing.

The #1 Mistake I’ve Made as an SEO Writer

Spring has sprung, summer is around the corner and it’s when things start slowing down for a lot of freelancers. I’ve written on this a few times, ie:

Freelance Writers: 3 Reasons Not to Panic — and Advice on What to Do — When Things Get Slow

SEO Writing Jobs Drying Up?

The reason I reference these posts is, many freelancers start to panic around this time, especially if they’re accustomed to being somewhat busy, then nothing happens for a few weeks at a time.

The reason nothing is probably happening is inconsistent marketing – this is the #1 mistake I’ve made as an SEO writer. I get so busy actually doing projects that I forget (or just don’t have time) to send out those marketing emails. And then one day I look up and there’s nothing on my desk.

Then I’m like, “Ok, time to hit the marketing hard again.”

The SEO writer highlighted in this post is very smart – so much so that he’s worried about filing his taxes and the $90,000 foreign income exemption. Read the post to find out how he stays so busy. He has a rock-solid strategy that practically insures he’ll be landing freelance writing jobs as long as he wants.

Why I No Longer Market for Freelance Writing Jobs, But You Probably Should Continue To

Now, as I’ve stated in previous posts, I haven’t marketed for SEO writing jobs (or any kind of freelance writing jobs) in well over a year. It’s because I’ve been at this long enough and get referrals that I don’t have to. And of course, I have my own projects (ebooks/seminar writing) that give me extra income streams so I don’t rely on clients so much.

But, I’ve been freelancing since 1993 – so don’t measure what may be going on with your freelance writing business against mine. Hindsight is 20/20, so I have enough history under my belt to look back and nail down my mistakes so I can share them with you in hopes that you don’t do the same.

As Patrick points out in his post, What To Do When You Feel Like A Miserable Online Business Failure:

[There] are lessons that begin each chapter in your life’s story; what you learn from them and how you implement that information into your life is how those chapters end.

SEO Writing Advice: When to Listen to “Experts”

As my mother used to say, “You don’t have to make the mistake to learn the lesson.” It’s one of the best pieces of advice she ever gave me because she basically meant, learn from the experiences of others.

If you trust the source and they’re where you want to be, why wouldn’t you learn from that, right?

A Solid Reason to Contact New Prospects and Old Clients Right Now that Could Land You Some SEO Writing Jobs

The free report on plagiarism and content theft I gave out in Monday’s issue of the newsletter is an excellent reason to make contact with old/existing clients and new prospects right now. It’s in Word so you can customize it with your firm’s information.

Which Ebook Will Help Me Land More Freelance Writing Jobs?

People often ask me which of Inkwell Editorial’s ebooks I’d buy if I was just starting out. “Well, it depends,” is my usual answer – on what they need help with, their niche, their skill set, etc.

But overall, after being asked this many times over the years, marketing remains the main stumbling block for many. With that being said, if I were just starting out and had no freelance writing clients, or just a few and wanted to start landing more, I’d get How to Find Unpublished Freelance Writing Jobs.

As I state on description page, I discuss 7 tactics I use to find freelance writing jobs. Because of the way I market, I tend to stay pretty busy as a freelance writer. And even when I’m not, I don’t worry because I know that the way I market is counter to how others market.

Just throwing this out there.

As always, here’s hoping this insight helps. Yeah, the slow season is coming. It does every year. But it’s how you prepare for it that will allow you to thrive, or panic and start looking for/stay at that dreaded j-o-b.
