FREE SEO Writing Ecourse: How to Write Themed Content and Start Charging $75-$250+ Per Article
In the May 18th post here, we discussed themed SEO content, ie, what it is, how to write it, how it produces greater results than “regular” SEO content. Perhaps more importantly, we discussed in a post a few days later how and why SEO copywriters can charge more for this type of content.
These posts brought in quite a few queries. One kind of summed up what every one wanted to know. This freelance SEO writer wrote:
Good afternoon, Yuwanda (wherever you are — Jamaica?)
I’m so very interested in the themed content writing. Could you steer me (and other writers?) to a website that might explain the how of writing it (how to find the other “themed” words to use in an article with a primary keyword, mostly).
John Coutts, the SEO writer who did the guest post on the 18th about themed content was kind enough to share a couple of great resources when I asked him about it. Following is his detailed answer.
Once again, thanks John!

Where to Learn How to Write Themed SEO Content: FREE Expert Advice
Andy Williams and Michael Campbell, have written about this, but they have tended to write articles, white papers, etc on the subject.
Andy Williams has two ebooks he offers as free downloads from his website. One is on Google authority sets, and I freely admit that part of my article came mainly from his findings, though I of course checked it all out for myself to confirm it. His other ebook, Ranking Without Page Rank Or Links, is an excellent report on how themed content can and invariably does rank well without any “props” such as PR or back links, and keeps its rankings too. He produces a lot of personal proof with screen shots, etc.
Andy Williams is especially an advocate of themed content, and he programmed the best software on the market, Web Content Studio, to help anyone achieve this. I . . . use the software. It can crawl the top 10 results in Google to harvest LSI words and phrases for any given keyword. It does a lot more than that, but that’s its main strength. It’s a brilliant piece of software.
Anyway, I have to say that my article, while being something I am very familiar with and something I have confirmed many times for myself (that themed content works better than “ordinary” content), is based around findings that were first put out several years ago by people like Andy Williams and Michael Campbell.
They of course do not have any copyright or patent on the information – it’s there for anyone to discover and confirm. I have done tests myself, and in the course of my work have confirmed it many times, which is why I feel justified in writing on the subject now with some authority, especially now that Google’s Panda (Farmers) update has clearly shown where the future for successful content lies.
One of the main problems with telling people about how to write themed articles is how they get the theme words and phrases. As I already mentioned, I use software to generate perhaps 100 – 150 theme words and phrases. From that I weed out the best 50 -75 words and phrases and try to use them in the article. Invariably I rarely get to use them all, but I will generally use 30 to 40 of them.
Doing all this manually is very time consuming, and not nearly as thorough either. It is possible to use the tilde (~) in Google search queries to get highlighted LSI words in Google’s results, but it isn’t really all that good to be honest.
Basically, what you do is put the tilde before each word of your query. If your search phrase – main article keyword – is “dog training,” for example, then type this into Google: ~dog ~training. The results will have highlighted words and phrases. These are your LSI or theme words.
A quick check tells me that Google, in this example, returns phrases like, “pet education” canine education” and “dog obedience.” This is Google telling us that an article on “dog training” should include these phrases. However, while this is good, using the tilde does not return nearly enough LSI words.
There are other ways of gathering theme words manually, but they all take quite a lot of time. However, that part could be downplayed by pushing the benefit of themed content performing so much better than “ordinary” content.
OK, I’m rambling here…

FREE E-Class on How to Write Themed SEO Content
Here is a link to a free e-course on how to write themed SEO content. It is very detailed. The course used to sell for $127, but the developer, Dr. Andy Williams (the very one from John’s post above) is now giving it away for free.
SEO Copywriting Advice: How Much Should You Charge for Themed SEO Content
My pat answer is, “What you charge as a freelance / SEO writer is up to you.” But, from the few responses I’ve gotten, $50-$75 per page/article seems to be a starting point.
One freelancer wrote:
I’ll definitely be charging at least $75 a page for this. Must add it to my website and so on and tout it in the queries!
Another chimed in with:
In the beginning, I really didn’t know how well this themeing worked, which is why I started with $25 back in November, then raised to $35 in January. Now that I’ve seen several clients say they are getting better and faster rankings, I am convinced that it is worth $75, but I want to test it at the $50 price level first.
Writing for SEO: What I’d Charge for to Write Themed Search Engine Optimized Articles
I personally think anything less than $75 is too little. I’d start at $85 and work my way up from there. If it was technical themed SEO content, I’d start at $100 – -$125/page.
As I told another SEO writer, I know of two SEO copywriters who charge $250/page for this type of writing – because it is time consuming. And, think of the value you’re giving a site owner – value that they’ll pull profits on for years to come.
Just something to think about.

An Observation: Search Engine Optimization Copywriting Is a High-Paying, Growth-Oriented Field
Just as an aside, SEO writing is only growing – and as this post illustrates, it’s becoming more and more technical. This means companies are willing to pay more for it. I’ve been writing SEO content since 2007, and STILL many clients that I speak with don’t know what it is. And of those who do, very few understand the intricacies of it – that’s why they hire me.
Just last week I had to explain to a client (an internet marketing firm director) how to get more traffic for his clients (that my firm was writing the articles for).
What all of this spells is opportunity, opportunity, opportunity – and high-paying ones at that. When I first started, I charged $25 per article. Now, it’s $45 and up (and that’s low). So if you’re considering a career as an SEO writer, jump on in. The waters are full of opportunity.
