I’ve been writing SEO content since 2007. It literally changed the trajectory of my freelance career because it taught me the intricacies of marketing online. Knowing how to write for search engines, which is what SEO writing is all about by the way, teaches you how search engines find and rank web pages.
Once you know this, it’s like opening the doors to the online marketing kingdom. I’ve made thousands of dollars per year promoting affiliate products and as a self-published writer (see Tip #7) — all because I learned how to write search engine-optimized content.
Is SEO Writing Still a High-Earning, Home-Based, Freelance Business Option?
With all of that being said, I still get questions from aspiring online writers asking if SEO writing is STILL a viable career option. And the answer is yes. We’re just at the beginning really people. Why do I say this?
Well consider this, a friend of mine was telling me the other day about a friend of hers who didn’t even know how to log on and check email. Really! There are still people in this world who just haven’t hopped on the online bandwagon, and of those who have, many just use it for simple things, eg, making airline reservations.
Also, it’s heavily searched topic. How do I know? Well as you know if you drop by here regularly, I’m an avid article marketer, and consistently, my top performing article over at EzineArticles, is What is SEO Article Writing? – SEO Copywriting Explained, which I submitted to the site back in 2009 (January 24, 2009 to be exact)! That’s over five years ago — and many are still searching for and viewing it.
FACT: Approximately 450 people a month are looking up SEO writing, wanting to know what it’s all about according to the number of views this article has gotten (over 28,000).
Even My Friends and Family Don’t Grasp What I Do
I don’t even try to explain what I do to friends and family anymore. I just say that I’m a writer because if I throw “SEO” in there, I have to get into this long explanation about what it is (and usually I’m at a bar and the last thing I want to talk about is work!) 🙂
If you mention things like blogging, keywords and infographics to them, they’d probably look at you like you had two heads. So yeah, there’s a lot of money to be made online — in many careers, if you’re not afraid to take the plunge. And the field is still wide open for newbies. Proof?
Well, following is the email I received on 4/29 that prompted me to write this post:
“April 2014 Was My Best Month as an Online Writer”
I purchased your Seo Writing Ebook a few days ago and have been reading it and many other posts on your site. I’ve been a single father of four since 2005 and written articles for free and pay for decades. I retired mid-2001 and started piddling around on Elance. com and Guru.com.
April 2014 was my best month (emphasis added) and I was trying to think of a way to duplicate it. I don’t know how I found InkWellEditorial.com, but I’m so glad I did. I can write and sometimes get paid, but I didn’t have a marketing plan so repeat customers was by-guess and by-golly.
I can’t thank you enough for the SeoWriting eBook and how much solid advice you give away for free. Today I purchased a domain name (domain name was listed) to start my own SEO writing business.
First, congratulations on your success. Isn’t it an amazing feeling — to be able to take your career in your own hands and have its fate determined by you and not someone else? As for duplicating, keep doing what you’re doing — kick the methods that are working up a notch or two. It’s going to make for some long days, but it’s worth it.
FYI, one of the quickest ways to grow your business is to outsource jobs. The reason is, there are only so many hours in a day, and when you’re doing all the work, eventually you run out of hours. So, what do you do? Find more hours, ie, manpower. And that means outsourcing.
Now, outsourcing comes with its own set of headaches, but that’s what growing a business is. At each level, there’s always going to be something else to deal with. See this post for more insight into outsourcing: Freelance SEO Writing: Insight into How to Make “Real” Money Doing This Type of Writing. Again, congrats on your success.
A Hot Niche in Which to Make Money as an SEO Writer
FYI, one area I really see growing exponentially in the online world is the need for services for self-published authors, as this survey highlights. Everything from updating their blogs and writing press releases, to creating ebook covers and proofreading/editing their books.
And of course, you can use your knowledge of SEO to help them when you write their press releases, update their blogs, and interact on social media.
SEO content writing has matured as a profession, as I said in this post, writing:
Now, SEO writing has matured as an industry and there’s more competition. But the need for content (thanks to content marketing has soared as well, so there’s plenty (plenty!) of work out there. … Taking the advice here, you can get a sneak peek of what this career could be like for you.
Remember, SEO teaches you how to market anything online — so find a niche that suits you, and apply this specialized knowledge.
