Finding Online / SEO Writing Jobs: Did the Merger of oDesk and Elance Help or Hurt Freelance Writers?

This past Monday, I received the following email from a subscriber.

Hey Yuwanda, I was just wondering what the seo market looks like since two of the major freelance websites merged together and also if you have an active forum in case any questions arise. Thanks.

Did the Merger of oDesk and Elance into Upwork Help or Hurt Freelance Writers

In case you don’t know what he’s talking about, oDesk and Elance merged in the spring of 2015 to become what is now known as Upwork. And whether you love these type of “content mill-like” sites or hate them, they’re not going anywhere.

Head on over to this site’s parent site, InkwellEditorial.com, to find out how this merger affects finding freelance writing work.

What’s Your Take on the Freelance Writing Market These Days?

Have you gotten work from sites like Upwork? Have you seen an uptick in demand for your services? A downturn? How do you find writing jobs? Would you ever consider using a site like Upwork? Why/why not? Sound off in the comments section below.

Writing SEO Content in 2017: 5 Things Freelance Writers Need to Know

I started redesigning Inkwell Editorial, this site’s parent site, back in the spring of this year. Yeah, that long ago. It finally went live on Halloween – and I avoided all curses, thank goodness!

I last time I had the site redesigned was in 2008; going from an HTML-formatted design to WordPress. The were two reasons I decided to have it redone this time. One reason is that my freelance writing life has changed. I talked about that in a recent post on InkwellEditorial.com.

The other reason I had it redesigned is that it wasn’t mobile-friendly. This meant I was losing tons of traffic, which brings me to the first thing SEO content providers need to know about writing web copy going into 2017.

SEO Copywriting E-Course Details

Yuwanda Black of New Media Words: An Online Writing CompanyIf you have a question that’s not answered below, feel free to send me an email: info[at]InkwellEditorial.com. Note: Seo Writing Jobs is a subsidiary site of Inkwell Editorial.

What qualifies you to teach me about SEO writing?

I’ve been a freelance writer since 1993, and have specialized in providing SEO content since 2007. I head New Media Words (NewMediaWords.biz), an online writing company. See my full bio.

What’s the difference between your SEO writing ebook and the SEO copywriting course?

The SEO ebook teaches you how to get SEO writing work, particularly if you already have experience as a freelance writer.

Even though it is complete and specific enough to give those with no experience as a freelance writer a leg up in getting SEO writing work, many seem to be terrified of taking the leap; they want someone to hold their hand and walk them through the process.

They want to be led through what SEO is all about, what to expect from clients, how to price services, how to write SEO content, how to market for work, the terminology of SEO, how to talk to clients, what kinds of questions to expect from clients, what types of assignments to expect — and on and on and on. This is what the SEO copywriting course will cover — in painstaking detail.

Again, I put off teaching this kind of course for a long time because it is very time-consuming. Many have bought the ebook and have gone on to very successfully start getting work in this niche, as witnessed by the testimonials on the page discussing the ebook. And yes, every one of those are actual testimonials I’ve received from those who bought the ebook and implemented the tactics I discussed.

But, if you want complete SEO copywriting training — from the ground up and beyond — then this course will give it to you.

Cost: $397.  Get full details. FYI, you can pay in 2 installments, and/or pay $0 now using PayPal’s BillMeLater program.

How often is the course updated?

The course is updated as frequently as Google makes algorithm changes that affect SEO writing. This is usually every every three to four months, so it’s always current in terms of what you need to know about how to write SEO content correctly.

How do I enroll?

Send payment and lessons will be sent via email as .pdf files (5 modules, as discussed below). All lessons are delivered within 24 hours after payment (if you order M-F). Note: If you order the class on a weekend, the files will be delivered the next business day.

How are the lessons dispensed?

Lessons are sent via email. You will be sent all modules at once (if you purchase the entire course), or the particular module you ordered if you order individual modules. This will allow you to work through them at your leisure.

How long do I have to complets the lessons?

You will have two weeks from the time you get the course files to turn in your writing samples and marketing plan (again if you order the entire course and complete the exercises). I will personally review your SEO writing samples and your marketing plan.

My feedback is very personalized and in-depth, averaging anywhere from 8-20 pages. I answer questions you ask, and give you info on things you may not even know to ask.

It takes me anywhere from two to four hours to comb through the exercise you submit and write my report, which is where the real value of the course is, and why I implore all participants to complete them and turn them in to me.

What if I have questions while I’m going through the course? Do you offer support?

I’m here! As the class is interactive, you can email me questions at any time when you’re going through the course. Beyond this, I’m available as well.

Note: If you don’t submit your marketing plan and SEO writing samples within the two-week time frame, I am under no obligation to review them. I usually will, but it will be at my leisure, which can take a month or more.

What if I have questions once I start my online writing biz? Will you help?

The whole goal of my freelance writing websites (this one and it’s parent site, InkwellEditorial.com), is to help aspiring freelancers.  They’re both filled with years of personalized information. Nine times out of 10, if you have a question, I’ve alreayd answered it. So comb through these sites, or shoot me an email with your questions.

While I don’t offer individualized, one-on-one coaching (I’d have to charge prohibitively for that), I answer questions from freelancers all the time. So yes, in this sense, I’m always available.

Don’t forget your freebies

With enrollment, you get the ebook, How to Make $250 or More Per Day Writing Simple, 500-Word Articles free*. This ebook also contains The Small Biz Marketing Kit, which details 8 free and/or low-cost ways to market your services — online and off.

How do I pay?

We accept all payments via PayPal, where you can pay via credit card, debit card, e-check or BillMeLater (pay $0 now and take up to 6 months to pay). Get full details.

Note: You must have a PayPal account to send funds; it’s free and easy to open one. As course is delivered electronically, no refunds are offered once the files have been sent to you. No exceptions.

*Free ebook is delivered along with course files.
