When I first started providing SEO copywriting services in 2007, I wrote about how I sent out a few emails and got work almost immediately (literally within days). This has happened to quite a few of the SEO copywriters who’ve contacted me since then as well, as the testimonials on the SEO writing ebook website illustrate (and yes, all of them are real).

This is what happens when you “wait” on SEO writing jobs to roll in.

But, the opposite also happens. A little over a week ago, I received the following email from an aspiring SEO writer:

Hello Yuwanda,When you contacted seo companies for the first time, did you send along a resume with the letter? I’ve contacted 7 companies 10 days ago (with only a letter) and haven’t heard back from any. There are no typos in the letter and I’m really concerned that I’m not getting any responses, not even a ‘not interested’. Can you offer any suggestions? I appreciate your help

Organic Search Results Make Your Competitors Less Relevant

Consumers trust organic search listings. According to a study by Jupiter Research (a Forrester company), web surfers actually prefer and trust organic search results more. In fact, they are 8.5 times more likely to be clicked on than paid search results.

Following is some insight into paid versus organic search engine results from Forrester (http://bit.ly/7FJy), a leading research firm. Although these stats are from 2006, they haven’t shifted that much since then.

§  93% of all Internet traffic initiates with a search engine;

§  89% are first-time visitors;

§  99% do not search beyond the top 30 results;

§  97% never look beyond the top three results;

§  76.7% of Google users click on the organic (unpaid) listings first;

§  the top three websites in any industry earn 65% of all online revenue;

§  the top 10 websites have 78% more traffic than those in positions 11-30

The fact is, if your site is packed with well-written, informative content that helps a surfer make a decision, it will quickly evolve into an authority site, seamlessly moving up in SERPs (search engine results pages) and helping you to take advantage of all of the stats listed just now.

Search Engine Optimization Tip: What Is an Authority Site & Why They Do Well in Organic Search Engine Results

An authority site is simply one that has a reputation for being a “complete resource center” in a particular niche. For example, let’s say you wanted to explore being a freelance writer. So, you go Google the phrase “freelance writing advice” (without quotes).

The second site to pop up is Inkwell Editorial, this site’s sister site on freelance writing (as the graphic below illustrates). Once you get there, you’ll find articles on everything from freelance writer salaries (http://bit.ly/c83JZ6)  to article marketing (http://bit.ly/djfCXu) to freelance writing rates (http://bit.ly/abEB2F). So, a visitor may bookmark it to come back to later.

This means that the site will start to generate traffic just from its website name alone, and have a reaction like the one from a recent reader who found InkwellEditorial.com and remarked:

I stumbled across your site and I kept getting hooked, wanting to read another article, then another one, then another one. Needless to say, I’ve become a fan of your site and will definitely bookmark it to come back for more.

First, this reader found the site via organic search results. Then, the content “hooked her,” as she put it.

This is what good, informative (keyword rich) content does. It builds reader loyalty and trust. This eventually leads to brand name recognition and sales (something you can point out to prospective clients in a special report if you’re an SEO copywriter who’s marketing for more clients, by the way).
